RoRo and container quotations can include different services, so comparing only the freight line is not enough. Ask each provider to describe the transport method and vehicle requirements in writing, then compare the same end-to-end journey.
Use a consistent comparison sheet
For each offer, record the provider, quote date, expiry date, departure and destination points, vehicle details and expected service window. Add separate rows for collection, loading, freight, insurance, port charges, clearance services and final delivery. Mark every amount as included, separately quoted or still unknown.
Ask whether the vehicle must be running, how it will be handled, whether any items may remain inside, and what preparation is required. Get answers from the provider for that specific service; do not assume a universal policy.
A hypothetical comparison
Offer A lists freight of 1,600 and separate handling and inland charges totaling 900: the comparable subtotal is 2,500. Offer B lists freight of 2,000 with those services included, plus 200 of destination charges: its subtotal is 2,200. Before insurance and government charges, B is 300 lower despite the higher freight headline.
This example does not establish that one transport method is always cheaper. It shows why missing services must be reconciled before comparing totals. Put each offer into the car shipping cost calculator and save both results with their inclusion lists.
Compare risks that the total does not show
- What happens if the vehicle misses the planned sailing?
- Who documents condition at collection and delivery?
- What insurance cover is available and what excess applies?
- Who arranges destination collection and within what free-time window?
- Are loading, unloading and non-running vehicle fees included?
- Which charges are payable in another currency?
A price difference may reflect a meaningful difference in service, timing or responsibility. Decide whether that difference matters for your vehicle and schedule.
Keep import compliance separate
A shipping provider’s willingness to carry a car does not itself establish import eligibility. Check the destination’s requirements before booking. For US imports, start with CBP’s official vehicle import guidance.
