Method, assumptions and worked example
Enter weights as percentages of the whole course, not percentages within separate categories. For a category, first calculate its score using your syllabus rules, then enter that category score and its course weight.
Two different grade numbers
Course points earned = sum of score × weight ÷ 100. Completed-work average = course points earned ÷ completed weight × 100. Only when completed weights total 100% is that average also the final course grade.
Worked example
Homework scored 90% at 20% course weight and a midterm scored 80% at 30% weight contribute 18 + 24 = 42 course points. Completed weight is 50%, so the completed-work average is 84%. The remaining 50% is pending. To finish with 80%, the required remaining average is (80 − 42) ÷ 50 × 100 = 76%.
Pending work is not a zero
Select Pending for a future assessment; its score is ignored. A completed score of 0 is counted. Completely blank rows are skipped; partially filled completed rows must be corrected. Listed weights above 100% are rejected. Any unlisted course weight remains ungraded.
The tool also shows your possible final grade if all remaining scores are 0% or 100%. A required average above 100% is flagged as unreachable under this model. A negative required score means the target is already secured even with zero on remaining work, assuming no separate pass requirement.
There is no automatic dropped-score, extra-credit, letter-grade or rounding policy. Your syllabus controls those rules. Scores here use a strict 0–100 scale; keep full precision until applying your course’s official rounding rule.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my current average differ from course points?
The current average is normalized to completed weight. For example, 42 points earned from 50% of the course gives an 84% completed-work average.
Can I enter ungraded assignments?
Yes. Choose Pending and enter their course weights. Their score fields are ignored; they are not treated as zeros.
What if weights exceed 100%?
Correct the course weights. This calculator rejects totals above 100%; it does not silently normalize an invalid full-course plan.
