Method, assumptions and worked example

How it works

Course quality points = grade points × GPA credits. Semester GPA divides included quality points by included credits. Cumulative GPA combines those totals with previous GPA × previous credits. Excluded rows do not contribute.

Worked example

Courses of 4.0 points for 3 credits and 3.0 points for 4 credits give 24 quality points over 7 credits: semester GPA 3.429. Add a previous 3.2 over 30 credits to get 120 ÷ 37 = 3.243 cumulative GPA.

Using the result

Use your institution’s grade conversion. Failed courses often have zero points but still count in GPA credits; passing non-GPA courses should be excluded. Repeat replacement, forgiveness and transfer policies are not inferred. A previously rounded GPA can create a small cumulative approximation error.

Frequently asked questions

Does a failed course count?

Include it with zero points and its GPA-bearing credits if your institution counts it.

What about repeated courses?

Apply your institution’s replacement policy to the prior totals and included rows; this tool does not automatically remove a past attempt.
