Method, assumptions and worked example
Build your time card
Choose a fixed seven-day workweek. Day 1 means its first day, not necessarily Monday. Enter each shift, subtract unpaid break minutes and use the next-day option when work crosses midnight. Paid breaks stay included. The tool uses clock durations and does not model daylight-saving changes.
Hours and gross pay formula
Paid hours = (finish − start − unpaid breaks) ÷ 60 when times are expressed in minutes. Weekly overtime hours = max(0, weekly paid hours − your threshold). Gross pay = regular hours × hourly rate + overtime hours × rate × multiplier.
Worked example
Five 09:00–18:00 shifts, each with a 30-minute unpaid break, total 42.5 paid hours. At 20 per hour with overtime above 40 hours at 1.5×, gross pay is 40 × 20 + 2.5 × 30 = 875. This is before taxes and deductions.
Use the right overtime rules
The US federal rule generally requires at least time-and-a-half after 40 workweek hours for covered nonexempt employees. Other rules may differ. This tool does not determine eligibility, calculate daily overtime or handle double-time, bonuses or blended rates. Two workweeks are calculated separately, never averaged. Workweeks starting mid-day require separate allocation outside this tool; use midnight boundaries here. Split shifts crossing the final midnight of a workweek into separate week rows and allocate breaks accurately.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter an overnight shift?
Yes. A 22:00 start and 06:00 finish needs “Next day”. Shifts cannot exceed 24 hours, and overlapping rows are rejected.
Are lunch breaks paid?
Subtract only breaks that are unpaid under your actual arrangement. The calculator cannot determine entitlement.
Can I calculate a two-week paycheck?
Yes. Select two workweeks and assign each shift to week 1 or 2. Weekly overtime is calculated separately, using one hourly rate.
