Calculation breakdown
Method, assumptions and worked example
Estimated annual net pay = gross cash pay − gross pay × sum of effective tax rates ÷ 100 − other annual payroll deductions. Divide by the selected number of pay periods for the result.
Worked example
For annual pay of 60,000, assumed effective rates of 10%, 3% and 7.65% total 20.65%. Estimated taxes are 12,390. After 3,000 of other deductions, net annual pay is 44,610, or 1,715.77 over 26 pay periods.
Use effective rates, not marginal brackets
An effective rate describes total tax divided by the gross-pay amount used here. A top tax bracket does not apply to all income. Estimate each rate from a reliable payroll projection or comparable payslip. The example rates are illustrative and are not calculated from your filing status or jurisdiction.
This is a manual budget model, not a statutory payroll engine. It does not calculate Social Security wage caps, additional Medicare tax, state rules or pre-tax benefit treatment. Enter effective rates that already reflect relevant deductions and thresholds. Other payroll deductions reduce cash pay here; they do not automatically lower taxable income.
Frequently asked questions
Are the default rates my actual tax rates?
No. They are example inputs. Replace them with effective rates appropriate to your payroll.
Why are twice-monthly and biweekly pay different?
Twice monthly usually means 24 payments; every two weeks usually means 26. Annual net pay is divided by the selected count.
