A US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. An Imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. Select the definition before calculating; the two units are not interchangeable.
Formula and example
Gallons = liters ÷ liters per selected gallon. Reverse the conversion by multiplying. Ten liters is approximately 2.64172052358 US liquid gallons or 2.19969248299 Imperial gallons. One Imperial gallon therefore holds more liquid than one US liquid gallon.
Avoid an ambiguous “gal” label
The result names the selected gallon type. Check fuel, tank and recipe specifications for their actual unit rather than inferring it from a website’s language. This tool does not use the US dry gallon, and it does not convert mass to volume; that would require density.
Switching gallon type changes the definition used for the number you entered. Swap direction instead carries the calculated value into the reversed conversion. Zero and signed mathematical differences are accepted. Display rounding is separate from the underlying arithmetic.
