BRI Calculator (Body Roundness Index)

Estimate your Body Roundness Index (BRI) using metric measurements. (Geschikt voor Nederland)

BRI Calculator Overview

Inputs:
 • Gender (Male/Female)
 • Height (in cm)
 • Waist Circumference (in cm)
Output:

Your BRI score and associated health category.

Formula (Thomas et al., 2013):

BRI = 364.2 - 365.5 × √(1 - (WC / (H × π))²)

Where:

 • H = Height in meters
 • WC = Waist Circumference in meters
 • π = Pi (approx 3.14159)

This calculator converts your cm inputs to meters before calculation.

Understanding Your BRI (Lichaamsrondheidsindex)

What is BRI?

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a newer metric designed to better predict health risks than the traditional BMI. It focuses on your body shape—specifically abdominal roundness—rather than just your total weight.

A higher BRI score indicates a rounder body shape, which is strongly linked to higher amounts of visceral (internal) fat. This type of fat surrounds your organs and is a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other metabolic conditions.

BRI vs. BMI
 • BMI (Body Mass Index) uses only height and weight. It famously cannot tell the difference between a muscular athlete and an inactive person with high body fat.
 • BRI (Body Roundness Index) uses height and waist circumference (buikomvang). Because it measures your midsection, it provides a much better estimate of harmful abdominal fat.

For audiences in the Netherlands and Europe, where metrics like waist circumference are heavily emphasized in public health, BRI is a very relevant tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a health metric developed in 2013 by Thomas et al. Unlike BMI, which only uses height and weight, BRI uses height and waist circumference to measure body shape (roundness). It is often considered a better predictor of visceral fat and related health risks.

BRI is calculated using a complex formula: 364.2 - 365.5 * sqrt(1 - ( (Waist Circumference / (2 * PI)) / (0.5 * Height) )^2). All measurements must be in meters. This calculator handles the conversion from cm.

BRI scores are interpreted differently for men and women. Generally (for adults): Men: < 3.4 is considered normal/healthy, 3.4-5.1 is overweight, and > 5.1 is obese. Women: < 3.8 is normal/healthy, 3.8-5.7 is overweight, and > 5.7 is obese.

BRI is often preferred because it incorporates waist circumference (buikomvang), which is a strong indicator of visceral abdominal fat—the type of fat linked to metabolic diseases. BMI cannot distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, whereas BRI focuses on body shape (roundness).

Measure your waist at the narrowest point between your ribs and hips (usually just above the navel). Ensure the tape measure is snug but not compressing the skin, and measure after exhaling.
